Supercars tweaked suspension rules after investigation

Supercars’ motorsport boss Tim Edwards insists there was no smoking gun behind a recent tweak to its suspension regulations.

The category updated its nominal suspension positions document that specifies the mounting adjustment range limit for front lower control arms.

There are five mounting positions on both ends of the arms.

It is now explicitly stated that the maximum offset between fore and aft mounting positions chosen cannot exceed two.

The change followed suggestions that at least one team had manipulated the control components to access otherwise unachievable geometries.

Edwards confirmed to Speedcafe that inspections took place across multiple events but said no rules had been broken.

“There was speculation that some teams may have been trying to modify parts or achieve geometries that the front suspension was never designed for,” he said.

“Over two or three rounds we audited every car and found no evidence of that taking place.

“However, once everybody started talking about it, it became a topical subject about what people might do to actually achieve said things, even though nobody was doing said things.

“So we thought we’d nip it in the bud and make a tweak to the rules.”

The change was made ahead of Darwin and remained a talking point in the paddock in Townsville, where teams approached by Speedcafe praised Supercars for taking action.

Manipulation of control parts and the exploiting of tolerances is an increasingly hot topic due to the locked-down nature of the Gen3 ruleset.

Supercars also made changes to its brake rules ahead of Darwin amid suggestions teams were “playing around” with elements of the control calipers.
